The end of school year picnic was, once again, on the shores of Lago Cocibolca (Lake Nicaragua). With the oppressive heat during dry season (April and May) it is always such a joy to get out of the city even if just for a few hours. Most people, in the U.S. and Canada, don't realize how hot it can get when one lives without constant AC. Not having climate controlled classrooms, kitchens, living rooms etc. changes ones appreciation for shade and open spaces. This is one of the main reasons why we all appreciate our visits to the lake for our school picnics.
In the past I commented on how many of the scholarship students, those from poorer local families, did not attend the picnic. I speculated on them not being able to bring food, etc. Well, happy to report, many of the scholarship students did make it this time. Not sure if the school encouraged everyone to attend regardless of ability to bring food, or not. Either way, it was wonderful to see the majority of students and their parents at the picnic.

Playing some musical chairs is always fun. |

Picnics provide a space for the adults to get to know each other more. |

I would estimate about 200 people showed up for the picnic. |

For children, playing is the international language. |
